The competition
entry for a new housing area in Espoo emphasizes the rolling topography
of the site. The Buildings follow the curves of the terrain in a manner
reminiscent of European hillside cities. On the apex there is a common
park for the block. Long views from hill to hill bind the area together.
The traditional garden city typology is here interpreted in a new way.
The building areas are dense, leaving as much space as possible for recreation,
while the connecting green areas with pedestrian walkways don’t
intersect the roads. The hierarchy of spaces from public to private is
clear. All the houses have a private front and back yard, and the two
story houses can be extended by building either a small extension or a
tower giving access to the roof terrace.
The project was done with Freja Ståhlberg and Laura Viljakainen.
